A common symptom of a failing steering shaft is clunking and stiff spots while turning the steering wheel. General Motors has also issued a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) # 04-03-08-006G. This TSB explains that the electronic power assist motor gear must be inspected for backlash as the power assist motor gear causes a very similar clunk feeling and noise as the intermediate steering shaft. The intermediate steering shaft can easily be checked for play and identified as a failure by doing a proper inspection. If you install this part and still have clunking, most likely you will need the power assist motor assembly. A recall exists in the USA to replace this pump at no charge if your vehicle is included, See Recall # 10V073000. This part is also available for purchase see APDTY 112803. Also the sway bar end links, control arms, and remaining steering and suspension components should be inspected for wear and tear as all of these components are common to fail and cause suspension and steering noises.
